Built in 1975, the California Hotel and Casino has long been the cornerstone of Boyd Gaming. The original tower housed 300 rooms, but in 1984 the California underwent a $34 million expansion including 335 rooms, enlarged casino floor space, added restaurants and a sports book. January 1995, saw a second expansion project which extended the West tower adding another 146 guest rooms and suites, bringing their total room count to 781 rooms and suites.
In November 1996, the California Hotel and the newly opened Main Street Station, in a joint venture, completed a climate-controlled bridge. The bridge connects both properties on the mezzanine levels and provides easy access for clientele to a wide variety of amenities.
The completion of the bridge paved the way for renovation and expansion of the Cal's mezzanine retail corridor, aptly named Bridge Avenue. The corridor is home to Cal Logo Shop, Cal Gift Shop, Ethel M's Chocolates, Aloha Specialties Restaurant, Aloha Market, Lappert's Ice Cream and the Cal Arcade.
The mezzanine also offers a Sports Book, Dave's Aloha Bar, Banquet Facilities, slots, video keno and video poker gaming.
The Cal has over 1,120 slot and video machines with progressives such as Megabucks and Nevada Nickels, daily slot tournaments, Keno. Slot and video machines range from 5-cents through $5.00. Their 34 gaming tables include: twenty-two with blackjack minimums starting as low as $2.00, six craps tables with minimums starting at $2.00, two roulette tables, two Pai Gow, two Caribbean Stud. And a sports book.
A total of 4 restaurants are located on the main floor including the Market Street Cafe a 24-hour coffee shop; Redwood Bar and Grill with steaks, prime rib, seafood and chicken; Pasta Pirate with crab legs, fish, lobster, steak and homemade pastas, and the Cal Club Snack Bar with quick snacks. Bars include Dave's Aloha Bar by the sports book, Main Street Bar with 25-cent and $1 video poker, the Redwood Bar and the San Francisco Pub with progressive 25-cent video poker.
The California Hotel and Casino offers garage and valet parking, free shuttle service to other Boyd gaming hotels and casinos, in-room safes for $3.21 a day, and safety deposit boxes with a $20 key deposit.
The Cal has a slot club, RV park, swimming pool, 24-hour restaurant, breakfast room service, 4 restaurants including a snack bar, banquet facilities, tour and showroom information, gift and candy shops, video arcade and free shuttle service to other Boyd gaming properties. The Cal attracts many Hawaiian tourist on a regular basis.
