Fitzgeralds

On September 4, 1622, the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha set sail from Portobello, Mexico for Spain, loaded with newly minted silver coins, 80-pound bars of silver and gold, and other treasures. Less than 24-hours after the Atocha and it's fleet of 28 ships left harbor, hurricane winds drove the heavily loaded ship onto a reef in the middle of the night. Only 5 people survived, rescued from the ships mast the next morning. Before the ship's treasure could be salvaged, another storm blew all traces of the wreck from the sea.

So the treasure of the Atocha remained hidden for almost 400 years, until July 20, 1985. On that day, Mel Fisher and his crew of treasure hunters discovered the $400 million "Mother Lode" of Atocha's sunken treasure. Fourteen years and several thousands of dollars after Mel's early finds in 1971, the richest treasure ever lost was found.

The "pieces of eight" silver coins recovered from the Atocha were struck by hand in the Potosi mint of Columbia from crude, uneven blanks, or planchets, of silver, which gave each coin a somewhat unique size, shape and weight. Each coin featured a Greek Cross on one side with the Great Shield of Hapsburg (Philip III) on the other. Although the coins appear to be worn, they are actually in mint condition.

Several gold jewelry designs of passengers returning to Spain from the New World have been found on various shipwrecks near Florida. Among the most stunning of these is an intricately designed 18 karat gold chain made in the pattern of an olive blossom and an ornate gentleman's grooming tool (a combination toothpick and earwax remover).
