The 1.2 million square foot Casino Windsor has 100,000-square-feet of gaming space on two levels. The casino replaced the Northern Belle Casino built in 1994.

Amenities at the new riverfront casino includes a four-star four hundred room hotel, live entertainment in the lounge, a sports bar, several restaurants with snacks, buffet meals and fine dining. Atrium gift shop and Cigar Shop. Ample parking is available for 3,000 vehicles in the multi-level garage.

The main entrance of the $505 million casino greets guest with a 60-foot high rockscape waterfall pool and tropical plants. The 100,000-sq. foot casino (9,290 sq. meters) has over 100 gaming tables and 3,000 slot machines. The 18,000 sq. foot Canadian Club Salon, split on three levels includes: twenty-two high limit tables, private lounge and bar, and the 100-seat Cache restaurant. In March 2000, 209 $2.00 to $100 slot machines were added to the Canadian Club. Casino Windsor also added 114 nickel machines to its regular casino.

Hotel accommodations include: a 23-story tower with 389 guest rooms and suites, many overlooking the Detroit River. Casino Windsor has a health club with exercise equipment and a spa, seven level parking garage, three restaurants and three bar\ lounges.

Courtyard Foods and Shops - open for lunch and dinner, seats 450, wide variety of food selections. Riverside Grille - open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, seats 150. Terrace Cafe/ Garden Buffet - breakfast, lunch, dinner buffets. Also serves menu food selections 24-hours a day.

Bars and Lounges: Melodies - video poker machines built into the bar, live music. Mosaics - tapas food entries and live music. Showtime Lounge - live entertainment.

The original casino

Casino Windsor, Ontario's first Las Vegas type casino opened on May 17, 1994. The casino was operated by Windsor Casino Limited (W.C.L.), a consortium of Caesars World, Inc., Circus Circus Enterprises, and the Hilton Hotels Corporation.

The casino had approximately 50,000 square-feet of gaming space on three floors with 77 gaming tables with Baccarat, Mini-baccarat, Midi -baccarat, roulette, Blackjack, Big Six Wheel, Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker and "Let It Ride" Poker. The facility had over 1,700 slot machines in various denominations -- 25-cent, 50-cent, $1 - $5 - $20 and $100. Most of the slot machines and table games were wheelchair accessible. Casino Windsor accommodates approximately 4,000 guests.

The original Casino Windsor celebrated its "4th" birthday on Sunday May 17, 1998, before being closed. The focal point of the original casino was the third floors "Canadian Club," a preeminent, premium play area. The Canadian Club encompassed gaming tables, a bar, comfortable lounge area, was named in honour of the Canadian whisky distilled and bottled in Windsor.

Amenities consisted of a food court on the second floor with a varied menu including breakfast, Italian, deli and salad selections, Oriental, Canadian and American and a dessert bar. A souvenir and gift shop, and several bars located throughout the casino. The pavilion area had change machines, a coat check, coffee cart and a tourism information kiosk. Both valet and self parking . A free shuttle service to Casino Windsor was provided from all remote self parking lots.

Casino Windsor was located at 445 Riverside Drive West in Windsor, Ontario. It was open 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. You had to be 19 years of age or older to enter. All wagers and winnings were paid in Canadian dollars. Full foreign currency exchange facilities were also available at the casino.

The One-Year Review -- Economic impacts:

In its first year of operation alone, Casino Windsor and the additional tourists it attracted contributed $752 million to Canada's gross domestic product ($351 million of this was in Windsor-Essex County) and created 7,200 person-years of employment in Ontario (4,800 person-years in Windsor-Essex County). This economic activity represents a net gain to the economy, and not just a redistribution of existing wealth.

The KPMG study found that the labour income from employment created by Casino Windsor totalled $377 million in Ontario. The average labour income for jobs created directly by Casino Windsor was $37,100. The average labour income for spin-off tourism jobs was $35,600.
