On July 1, 1998, the Boardwalk was purchased by Mirage Resorts - MGM Grand purchased Mirage Resorts
Called the biggest little hotel-casino on the Strip, the Holiday Inn Boardwalk Casino was the dream come through for its former owner Norm Jansen. Jansen originally sold real estate for 40 years but envisioned that one day the south end of the Strip would become famous. He purchased a gas station and almost nine acres of land north of Flamingo Road in 1976.
Twenty years ago the Strip was nothing but sand. Property in the surrounding areas sold for $5.00 an acre but Jansen figured sooner or later investors would build casino's farther south on the strip and he'd become a millionaire -- he was right.
The Holiday Inn Casino Boardwalk is the largest franchised hotel in the Holiday Inn chain, but one of the smallest hotels on the strip compared to its neighbors, MGM Grand (5,005), Excalibur (4,000), Monte Carlo (3,014) and the Bellagio (3,000).
To compete against the giants that surround them, the Boardwalk decided to use a two-tier 1920s amusement park Coney Island theme. The lower tier of the Holiday Inn Boardwalk includes a midway with a clock that runs backwards, a 30-foot high jack-in-the-box, and a 45-foot high Jocko the Clown, the company's logo. The Boardwalks upper tier includes life-like mannequins riding a rollercoaster, a 60-foot-high 1906 Ferris wheel and a parachute jump with screaming mannequins, state-of-art lighting and individual sound system's with amusement park noises.
The Holiday Inn Casino Boardwalk has 654 rooms and suites priced from $69 Sunday through Thursday, $89 on holidays, weekends, during conventions. Amenities include cable TV, room service, two swimming pools, 6,000 square-feet of retail space with shops, food services, including a 24-hour deli and a 24 hour breakfast special. Over 4,500 square feet of meeting space. Ample parking is available with 990 spaces.
The new 33,000 square-foot gaming area has 650 slot, video poker, and video keno machines, 20 gaming tables with craps, roulette, Let it Ride, Mini-Baccarat, Pai Gow Poker, $1 minimum "21" tables and the Del Mar Race and Sports Book.
