In the 1540s the first Spanish explorers arrived in the Southwest from Mexico seeking treasures of gold and silver rumored to be in the hands of Native American tribes. Later in the 1800s the Virgin Banks formed part of the Old Spanish Trail that brought countless fortune-seeks to California. Explorers scoured the nearby hills and mountains in search of fabled hordes of gold. Later still came fortune-hunting miners who panned for nuggets in the Virgin waters. Some were lucky and left with pockets of gold.

In the early part of the 20th century, the Mesquite area was honeycombed with mines with colorful names like Gold Butte, Black Warrior and Key West. Prospects searched for silver, gold, copper, cobalt, nickel and lead.

River of Life

Some two thousand years ago the Virgin River and its mineral-rich water attracted the first human inhabitants to the region. The river, the Indians believed, possessed puagant, or sacred powers; they called it the River of Life. Mud from the river was prized by the Indians who believed it had great powers of healing and rejuvenation. The Moapa women, considered among the most beautiful of the Paiute nations, used the mud for skin treatments.

Legend also has it that the site, a level plain just north of the Virgin River, was long considered lucky by the Native Americans who settled this area and it was used as it is today for games of chance. A favorite game of the Moapa tribe was in a manner similar to craps with dice made from animal bones.

Chief among the area's native plants and trees is mesquite, after which the town in named. Considered good luck by the Native Americans of the region it was carried into battle and on hunting expeditions in the form of small carved totems. During ceremonies to call on friendly spirits the Indians burned mesquite wood like incense hoping that its pungent scent would beckon spirits to make earthly appearances. Tribesmen also concocted a potent cocktail made from cooked mesquite beans believing it would increase virility, fertility and rejuvenate the spirit.
