Hogansburg, NY 13655 After feuding for nearly fifteen years on whether or not to allow casino gambling on their land, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe finally came to an agreement to allow a casino to be built on their land. With over half of the 6,500 Mohawks unemployed, or holding minimum wage jobs, the revenue generated from the casino should put the majority of Mohawks above poverty level. The casino expects to generate over $30 million in annual income for the 1,000 employees working there.
The 50,000 square-foot, $30 million casino opened Sunday, April 11, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. with over 90 gaming tables with Baccarat, Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Let It Ride, Pai Gow Poker and Roulette. The Tribe is waiting for approval to install over 1,000 slot machines. Management predicts the casino will draw 1.5 to 2 million guests the first year of operation.
Amenities include a 180-seat restaurant, gift shop, lounge and entertainment area. Decor used is from the Mohawk's past heritage. The casino is located near the American-Canadian border on the St. Lawrence River, south of Casino de Hull in Quebec.
