The Desert Inn was purchased by Steven Wynn. He closed the DI during August 2000. The majority of the building will be imploded and replaced with a brand new resort. The information below is the DI's history.
The new Desert Inn, like its predecessor of 1950, is a luxurious property with a touch of elegance throughout.
Refered to as the "DI"(die) since the property first opened on April 24, 1950, the DI has 715 lavish rooms and suites with views of the Las Vegas Strip, some with a view of the Lagoon-style swimming pool or waterfalls. Guest room accommodations include terry cloth bathrobes and slippers to private suites with swimming pools and butler service. Room rates vary from season lows of $100.00 a night to an average of $150.00 to $215.00 a night, suites up to $15,000 a night.
Billionaire Howard Hughes walked into the DI one night and asked how much the room rates were? Then he asked how much to buy the place. Hughes purchased the resort in 1967, as well as several others. In 1993, ITT Sheridan purchased the resort. In 1997, ITT spent over $200 million renovating the place making it the most lavish on the Strip.
The Desert Inn has a 7,001-yard, 18-hole championship golf course with landscaped pools and lagoons, 20,000 square foot Spa offering guest massage therapy, aroma therapy, reflexology, therapy pools, weight training, steam room, sauna, private whirlpools and a salon. The DI has four tournament-class tennis courts staffed with professional instructors and lit for night play. The tennis complex includes a pro-shop.
Dining options include the Monte Carlo, a four star AAA rated restaurant with French gourmet cuisine, the Portofino with fine dining in a romantic setting, the Howan with delicacies of the far east and the Terrace Pointe which is open 24-hours a day.
The casino area includes 425 slot and video machines from 25 cents to $100, 32 gaming tables, 6 craps tables, 4 Baccarat tables and a high- roller room with 10 gaming tables. Games includes Baccarat, Blackjack, Pai Gow Poker, Roulette. The Desert Inn has a Keno Lounge and Sportsbook.
Amenities include live entertainment in The Crystal Showroom and Starlight Lounge. The Country Club has 30,000 square feet of space for meetings, special events and weddings.
