$80 Million Expansion Overview
The $80.7 million construction project which began in October, 1995, and was completed in June, 1997, added a 16 floor hotel Tower with 416 new guest rooms, 13,000-square-feet of new casino space with 500 slot machines, new Front Services area, new Valet Parking facilities, expanded Heath Club and Room Service area, and a truly unique new entertainment-oriented underwater-themed restaurant, the Fantasea Reef Buffet.
"Atlantic City continues to exhibit phenomenal growth," said Harrah's Atlantic City president Tim Wilmott. "The unprecedented cooperation between the public and private sectors is already paying dividends in terms of enhancing Atlantic City's appeal as a major tourist destination. This expansion project will allow us to continue our own impressive growth as well as capitalize on Atlantic City's bright future."
Harrah's new Marina hotel Tower connects to the current complex, allowing guests to travel to the new rooms from the current Atrium and Harbour Towers on any floor. Each of the 416 rooms features a comfortable seating area as well as a relaxed seaside decor reminiscent of a quaint vacation cottage. The new Marina Tower forms a 45-degree angle with the existing facility, creating an attractive courtyard entrance with a Hotel Valet Parking area and beautiful landscaping. With these new rooms now complete, Harrah's now offers 1,174 guest rooms and suites, making it one of the largest hotels in the state of New Jersey.
Harrah's 15,000 square-foot casino expansion extends from the current casino and offer players an additional 500 state-of-the-art slot machines. Completed on June 28, 1996, Harrah's now features approximately 80,000 square-feet of gaming space, 2,524 slot machines and 97 table games.
One of the most exciting components of Harrah's expansion project, however, has been the creation of an exciting; new buffet restaurant, The Fantasea Reef Buffet, which accommodates 400 guests in a spectacular marine themed setting. "This is a must-experience attraction that sets a new benchmark in terms of incorporating entertainment into the dining experience," said Wilmott. "The success of restaurants like the Hard Rock Cafe shows that guests want more than just good food for their dollar, they want to be dazzled. The Fantasea Reef does just that. We take guests on an imaginary voyage under the sea that stimulates their sense of sight along with their sense of taste."
Harrah's new $7 million Fantasea Reef Buffet restaurant features creative food presentations, tanks with over 12,000 gallons of salt water and hundreds of live tropical fish, huge 25-foot columns of coral, creative video presentations including the illusion of the water's surface projected on the 30-foot high ceiling and a retail center.
In fact, the scope of the Fantasea Reef's undersea environment is so grand that Harrah's has contracted the renown New Jersey State Aquarium to provide curator services for the priceless tropical fish that will be featured within the restaurant's immense salt-water tanks.
For the hotel component of the expansion project, Harrah's received $16 million in credit from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) towards future casino reinvestment obligations.
"Harrah's celebrated our 15th anniversary in Atlantic City when we began this ambitious project and we're celebrating our 60th year as we've completed the expansion," said Wilmott. "With our new hotel Tower, casino space and must-see Fantasea Reef buffet, we're confident that Harrah's will continue our leadership position into the next century," said Wilmott.
