The first hotel/casino build on the property was called the "Last Frontier," the second hotel/casino build on what we refer to as the "Strip." Nine years later in 1951, the property was sold to the owners of the first hotel/casino build on the Strip, called the "El Rancho." After being renamed the "Frontier" in 1955, the hotel/casino was closed and re-sold in 1957. The new owner operated the hotel/casino until he passed away in 1964. After his death the property was sold and demolished in 1966, to make way for a brand new "Frontier Hotel/Casino" which opened in 1967. Howard Hughes, who was on a buying spree at the time purchased the new Frontier and sold it in 1988. The property was purchased by Phin Ruffin, the current owner in 1997, who recently announced that he is going to have the New Frontier demolished to make room for a San Francisco themed resort to compete against the mega-resorts.
The New Frontier has 986 rooms and suites, 1102 slot and video poker machines, 22 gaming tables, 4 craps tables, bingo, bar with video poker machines, a video arcade and sportsbook.
Dining includes: Margarita's with Mexican food, Michelle's Village Cafe, the Silver Slipper Bar and the American Room with entertainment.
Retail outlets include, Chez Magnifigue with ladies fashions, a beauty salon, airline ticket outlet for American, Continental, Delta, TWA and United Airlines.
