Built in 1955, the Riviera was forced into bankruptcy shortly after its grand opening. With the aid of mob money the casino re-opened. In 1983 they filed bankruptcy the second time. New owners took over, spent millions sprucing up the place and finally re-gained much of the lost business.
The Riviera is know for its promotion of $40.00 worth of slot machine action for $20.00 as well as its "No ifs Ands Or .." (butts). The bronze plaque on the front of the building upset many, mainly people passing by with children, but many, especially women, enjoyed having their picture taken by it. The owners refused to remove it.
The Riviera has 2,100 rooms including 158 suites in four towers, four shows with live entertainment, six restaurants, 100,000-square-feet of convention space, 1,600-parking spaces in 2 garages, a 45,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom, 1,400 slot machines, bingo, keno and a Race and Sports Book. Four daily bingo sessions are held in the Mardi Gras Plaza on the second floor, 16 games per session.
