The Sahara is one of the oldest casinos on the Strip. Since its opening in 1952, the Sahara has made numerous improvements to make it the attractive resort it is today. With the addition of the new tower the Sahara has 1,720-rooms, 5 restaurants, lounges with live entertainment,a hair salon, logo shop, swimming pool, amusement center, meeting and conference rooms, a $15 million "Speedworld" and NASCAR Cafe.
Beginning on March 25, 2000, the Congo Room added a new production show to honor Las Vegas' Golden Age titled The Rat Pack is Back. Performed in the 550-seat Congo Room, "The Rat Pack is Back," is a song, dance and comedy tribute to some of the performers that made Las Vegas the Entertainment Capital of the World. When the show debuted at the Desert Inn last July, it was a complete sell out earning rave reviews from showgoers and the press. Shows are 7:30 and 10 pm on Tuesday's and Saturday's; 8 pm on Wednesday's, Thursday's, Friday's and Sundays. Tickets are available at the Sahara's Box Office and start at $34.95.
Restaurants include: Sahara Steak House for steaks and fine wines, Sahara Buffet, Caravan Coffee Shop, Jitter's Coffee House and the new NASCAR Cafe.
Sahara's 95,000-square-foot casino has over 2,500 slot and video poker machines, 50 gaming tables with most of the popular games, four craps tables, a Big Six Wheel, Poker Room with 10 tables, three lounges with video poker machines built into the bars: one lounge has 24 machines, another 43 and the Casbar has 11 machines plus live entertainment. The Sahara has a Keno lounge and a sportsbook that shares the theme of the old Las Vegas that "The Legend Lives On.".
Sahara's $15 million Speedworld puts you in the drivers seat, of a race, at 240-miles per hour in their 3-D Motion Theatre .
A new addition to the Sahara is the NASCAR Restaurant and gift shop plus the numerous cars on display on the Las Vegas Boulevard/ Sahara Street side of the casino. In addition to having a bite to eat and looking over all the memorabilia and cars on display, you can take a ride in some of them, or watch a video on racing.
In front of the Sahara you'll see a set of tracks for "Speed-The Ride," a roller coaster ride. The up to 70-mile per hour ride starts inside the Sahara, goes 25-feet under ground, makes a 90 degree loop, heads skyward 224-feet and reverses itself. The ride propels passengers from a speed of 35 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour in just two seconds.
Safety tests -- Before any new roller coaster is put into operation it must pass 100-hours of accident free safety tests. Sand bags are used instead of humans during the testing period.
